Start with people and bags, not the badge
A family of four with two large suitcases fits in almost any mid-size SUV. Once you have five or more people, or a pushchair plus luggage, a full-size seven-seater makes the trip far more relaxed. The test is simple: with every seat in use, is there still space behind the third row for your bags? On the big American SUVs there is. On smaller seven-seaters the third row is better for children and short trips.

Best value: GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe
The Yukon and Tahoe are close relatives, built on the same full-size platform with a V8, three proper rows and a large boot. They are the most practical way to move seven people around Dubai, and at AED 446 to AED 495 a day they cost less than many five-seat luxury saloons. They are also comfortable for long drives to Abu Dhabi, Hatta or Ras Al Khaimah.
Something more special: Escalade, X7 and GLS
If the trip is also an occasion, the Cadillac Escalade Luxury is a favourite for airport arrivals and weddings, with a long cabin and a commanding view. The BMW X7 40i and Mercedes-Benz GLS feel more European: quieter, smoother and easier to place in city traffic. For the ultimate statement there is the Cadillac Escalade V with 682 HP.
Five-seat SUVs for smaller families

Practical tips for families
- Child seats: ask when you book so we can check what is available for your dates and the ages of your children. UAE law requires young children to travel in a suitable child seat.
- Airport pickups: send your flight number and we can meet you at Dubai International (DXB) or Al Maktoum (DWC). See airport car rental.
- Day trips: Hatta, Al Ain, Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah and Abu Dhabi are all comfortable family drives from Dubai. Stay on paved roads, and ask us before planning any desert or off-road route.
- Several drivers: ask us about adding a second driver; every driver must meet the age and licence rules for the car.
